What inspired your journey into DJing, particularly in the soul genre?
It came directly from my parents, who were both avid record collectors of black music in their younger years. My Dad being a big collector of vintage 50s jukeboxes. Starting up my record collection and then eventually getting into more serious collecting when I caught the soul bug in my early 20s
What’s the most memorable set you’ve ever played, and why?
I could pick many from over the years but unsurprisingly this would have to be when I was given the opportunity to DJ at the 100 Club over 2 years ago. The nerves mixed with excitement before playing my first record there wasn't something I'd ever felt before as a DJ. The nerves completely disappeared as soon as I played my first track which I’ll never forget was Carl Hall - Is Your Love Going or Growing on Mercury.
Who are some of your greatest influences as a DJ and soul enthusiast?
When it comes to some of my favourite DJs or collectors that have shaped my musical tastes, there's so many to choose from. The Likes of Dave Ripolles & Dave Thorley come straight to mind for me, their across-the-board style really set them apart for me. I would listen to their Ultimate Choice / Soul People shows with Gumbo and Malayka and be blown away by the sheer quality of records being pulled out.
How does the soul scene differ between the UK and other European countries you’ve played in?
Although I love the UK soul scene; There is just something special about our European soul familia. From Movin’ On in Barca, Not Too Young Soul Weekender in Switzerland, Deep Cliffs in Portugal and many more that I can mention. The most important thing that struck me going to the Euro weekenders over the years is the energy of the crowd, and how open-minded the music is.
What do you think makes the soul community so unique and enduring?
I think it’s the only community I’ve been involved in that welcomes you with open arms. It feels like one big massive family
Are there particular cities or venues that stand out for their passion for soul music?
Honestly too many to mention but I have to say that currently, it’s Heart Of Soul, Lewisham at Zhulin Hidden Village (The Dojo!) That may be quite cheeky as I ’m also one of the resident DJs there but that right now is one of the hottest soul venues in the UK, a large portion of that reason is due to the younger crowd it generates.
What do you listen to when you’re not playing soul tracks?
If me and my partner are in the car, we will usually listen to Spotify playlists which can range from crime podcasts, or heavy metal / soft rock. We have a very eclectic taste!
Why do you think soul music continues to resonate with audiences today?
The passion that still drives everyone in the soul community to go miles (in some cases thousands of miles) so go to either a soul club, all-nighter, or weekender has always amazed me
And Finally... If you had to describe yourself using only the title of a soul record, what would it be?
